Our Partners

UN-Habitat’s urban resilience work is supported both financially and substantively by a number of partners. We also contributes to a number of communities of practice and networks to raise the resilience agenda globally.

Supporting Partners

European Commission: Support from the European Commission is largely channeled through the Making Cities Sustainable and Resilient Action (initiated in 2015). This Action is jointly undertaken with UNISDR and UN-Habitat’s role is to further develop the City Resilience Profiling Tool and implement in four pilot cities. This Action will be completed in early 2019. See the profile of Asuncion / Maputo.

City Council of BarcelonaUN-Habitat has maintained a longstanding collaboration with Barcelona City Council and has benefitted from expertise, in-kind staff time and financial support from the City Council. This fruitful collaboration has supported the development of the City Resilience Profiling Tool as well as its implementation in Barcelona and in pilot cities, most notably in Maputo (Mozambique).

Government of NorwaySupportive of UN-Habitat’s resilience work, the Government of Norway continues to contribute to all aspects of UN-Habitat’s work in this area, including knowledge development, implementation and advocacy.

Substantive partners

UNISDR: The Making Cities Sustainable and Resilient Action is jointly implemented by UN-Habitat and UNISDRthe United Nations office for Disaster Risk Reduction. UN-Habitat works with UNISDR to promote the Making Cities Resilient Campaign.

Local and regional governments

Local and regional governments are key stakeholders in urban resilience and in the achievement of sustainable urban development. Through partnerships such as the Medellin Collaboration for Urban Resilience, the Global Alliance on Urban Crises as well as direct cooperation with cities, UN-Habitat is connected with the following local government networks:

Benefiting from the location of the urban resilience office in Barcelona, UN-Habitat enjoys close working relations with various levels of government in the region.

Academia

By connecting research to practice, UN-Habitat is supporting the creation and adoption of innovative approaches to understanding, tackling and training on resilience. A promising network of universities (Urban Resilience Institute) working on issues related to urban resilience is blossoming and UN-Habitat continues to spearhead this initiative.

Private Sector

Support transformation in urban areas requires all stakeholders to be engaged. UN-Habitat signed an agreement with AXA group to develop a set of guideline to promote compliance to safer construction strategies for decision-makers. These efforts are furthermore a contribution to the World Urban Campaign.

Other partners

Union for the Mediterranean: Collaborations between UN-Habitat and UfM have been on both substantive and advocacy themes and the two organizations enjoy close working relations.

Smart City Expo World Congress: the annual Smart City Expo World Congress brings together key actors from the urban sphere. Through this collaboration, UN-Habitat has ensured a presence at this international event.

UNV: the online platform for volunteers is an essential resource for UN-Habitat’s urban resilience work, providing expertise and support to communication and knowledge work through translation, research and design.

Sant Pau Knowledge Centre: the Sant Pau Art Nouveau site hosts a range of international organizations and UN-Habitat is fortunate enough to benefit from this network through the coordination of the SPKC.
